Martinez

Useful Information for  Martinez CA

Martinez CA is famous for many things, but two stand out especially.
One is the invention of the martini, and the second is the birthplace of Joe DiMaggio, nicknamed “joltin Joe”.

As is true of so many areas in California, the Mediterranean climate and fertile soil attracted the earliest settlers to the area.  Founded by Don Martinez in the early 19th century as a result of a Spanish land grant, Martinez was also the commandant of the Presidio in San Francisco.  Since the land grant was recognized by the State as a legitimate title, Martinez developed the town which was later named after him.

Established as a trading post in 1849, the city was incorporated in 1876.  Many hopeful miners arrived after the discovery of gold in 1850, but few met with success.  Enough stayed behind to settle down for good, and the city saw a steady growth.

The Central Pacific railroad arrived in 1877, allowing farmers from the surrounding areas to ship large quantities of grain and agricultural products.  Shipping in the area also created a hub of financial opportunity.

The Shell Oil Company establishment arrived in 1915, and helped launch a residential building boom.

The Martinez of today is still a bustling and thriving community with opportunities for modern day settlers.
